How to Choose The Right Bootcamp For You?

Learn what to consider when choosing a bootcamp.

Each person will need to consider what is the right fit for them. When looking for the right program that will best support your career and personal goals, it can be important to consider what matters to you! You may want to investigate the different programs in order to determine which one is the right choice. Here are some points to consider while you evaluate your wants.

Consider:

  • Time: How much time do you want to spend in the program? Are you still working and can you learn the material over a dense period of time? For some people, a three-month course that is 40+ hours and 6 days a week may be ideal. For others, a program that runs between six months to a year may allow them the space to consume the material and even continue supporting themselves during the program. A self-paced program may also be an amazing option. Choosing a program with the right pace for your learning style and goals can be critical to your success.

  • Career Goals: Where do you want to end up? Do research on which languages, project experience, etc, etc are valued in your career choice. Remember that bootcamps are about learning the specific skills relevant to your career.Make an informed decision and choose the school that is best for your specific goals.

  • Format: The format of the program can make a difference in whether you are able to internalize and learn the material in a way best applicable to your future career. Consider whether an online, in-person, or hybrid format works best for you. Also, consider how much you want to be connected to real people offering support and if you’d like that to be the same people. These questions will impact which schools you choose.

  • Calculate the Costs: Consider how much the bootcamp costs. Like university or trade school, bootcamps are investments. Consider how you will pay and also look for programs that offer financial support or scholarships. It can also be essential to calculate hidden costs- will you be able to work while in the course or can you afford to not work? If you are working, is the program suited to you still being able to learn to the best of your capacity?

  • Assess Your Background: If you already have prior experience, choose a bootcamp that’s going to build on those skills rather than spending money re-learning what you already are capable of. If you do not have any skills, choose a boot camp that is going to spend time giving you the foundational skills.

  • Post-Bootcamp Success: Check the bootcamp’s career services. You can find bootcamps that provide career coaching, help with portfolios, interview preparation, resume and cover letter reviews, networking opportunities, and job placement services. Bootcamps may also offer mentorship programs.
