Learn about the tests involved in the graduate school application process

Different types of graduate programs have different expectations. Some may require testing, learn below about some of the tests used by graduate schools to consider an applicant’s standing. Understanding the different exams and their expectations can help you to determine when to prepare for exams depending on what your program of study requires.

1. GRE

As the most widely-used test to determine graduate school readiness, the GRE is a four-hour test that is split up into three sections: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. Because this test is so popular, there are an unlimited number of free study materials online. Here is a great place to begin.

2. GMAT

This test is not as widely used but is gaining popularity due to more people obtaining a master’s in business administration. This test is also four hours long, but the questions and sections are different and are also scored differently. The sections consist of analytical writing, integrated reasoning, data sufficiency and problem-solving, and reading comprehension and critical reasoning. 3. LSAT

This four-hour exam is taken by most pre-law students to heighten their chances of being accepted to law school. This test consists of four multiple-choice sections as well as an essay that is sent to each school that you apply to. Look here for a list of free resources to help you prepare.

4. MCAT

This four section test was created for prospective medical students and lasts more than seven hours. This test consists of critical analysis and reasoning; chemical and physical sciences; biological sciences; and psychological and social sciences. While daunting, you can succeed at these exams. If your graduate school program of choice requires an exam, start by looking at other people’s experience. This can help you determine when and how to best prepare for the exam. Consider discussing with your mentor your plan for preparing for these exams.
