Utilize School Catalog

Ways to utilize your school catalog to help you pick a major.

Your school catalog can serve as a major resource for you as you explore what major you’d like to enter. In the school catalog you will find:

  • A list of all the majors offered at the university.

  • A description of each major.

  • The courses offered for the major, with descriptions of what each class is about and typically when they are offered.

Here are 4 steps to take when researching your school’s catalog:

  1. Using the worksheet below, list out at least 10 majors you’ve researched in the college catalog.

  2. Go through each required class and mark next to it “Y” for “Yes, “N” for “No”, or “M” for “Maybe” based on the likelihood you will pass the course with a B- or better.

  3. Research the following questions for each major (if not available online or in the catalog, speak to someone in the department):

    1. How many classes are needed to graduate with the major?

    2. Approximately how many students are enrolled in the undergraduate program?

    3. How many new students are admitted each semester into the program?

    4. What are the various concentrations, if any, in this major?

    5. What are the typical minors, if any, for this major?

    6. What are some of the typical occupations that students go into with a degree in this major?

    7. What are the job prospects and salary ranges for each occupation upon graduation?

    8. What are some of the clubs and organizations related to this major on campus?

  4. Questions to consider after researching each major:

    1. How do you feel about the particular major and the department as a result of the research?

    2. What information will you need to collect in order to make a decision regarding the major?

    3. Will you continue to research the major?
